SmartStart Youth Financial Literacy Program TPC Foundation, Inc. (TPC) developed the SmartStart youth financial literacy program to change the way minority youth view wealth. Through the program, students learn the key to financial responsibility and to make responsible financial decisions and the importance of investing in their community and the next generation.
Who does SmartStart Target?
SmartStart targets low to moderate-income minority high school 11th and 12th students in urban communities served by Title I schools. Title I schools are defined as schools having difficulty meeting state standards due to high poverty levels as determined by United States Census data.
Why is SmartStart needed?
A comprehensive financial literacy program that speaks, in a culturally sensitive and age appropriate way, to urban high school students is needed to help urban minority youth improve their knowledge the financial arena.
SmartStart speaks to the specific needs of our audience (for example, market research suggests that African American teens spend six percent more a month than the average American teen because of the heavy emphasis that they put on trendy clothing, jewelry, and footwear.), it enables college students to better manage their high debt load, while building a sound financial future. And, in the long term, it will also help create better financial circumstances for the community by helping to ensure that wealth is passed from one generation to the next. Finally, SmartStart teaches participants to not only strengthen their own portfolios, but to use their economic empowerment to build fiscally stronger communities.
